  • Purpose.
    • Branches or merges pallets at a right angle depending on need.
  • Operation.
    • Branching: When a pallet arrives from above the timing belt, the mechanism ascends to lift the pallet from the conveyor, moving the pallet to another conveyor through the means of a timing belt. The mechanism descends when completed.
  • Merging.
    • The mechanism ascends and drives the belt to receive a pallet being transferred from another conveyor, the mechanism then descends to merge the pallet into the conveyor flow.

  • To lift the timing belt body 250N + workpiece 200N + pallet 25N = 475N, a Ø63 air cylinder is selected.
  • To convey at a speed of 27.4m/min, a gear head with a gear ratio of 1/10 is selected.
  • As a 90W timing belt deceleration motor is used, timing belt type T10 with 20mm width is selected.

  • Lift unit.
    • Conveyor lift unit weight: 25kg, workpiece weight: 20kg,
      pallet weight: 2.5kg,
      Total weight: 47.5kg, push force air pressure of cylinder with lift guide: 0.4MPa, theoretical output: 125kgf x 0.7 (efficiency) = 87.5kgf
      →As this value is 54% of lifting output, the lift unit is acceptable.
  • Belt conveyor travel unit.
    • Workpiece 20kg, pallet 2.5kg, total 22.5kg/2 (2 motors) = 11.25kg.
    • Volume calculation N = workpiece x friction coefficient x speed/6120 (unit conversion factor) x mechanical efficiency.
    • 11.25 x 0.4 x 27.4/6120 x 0.7 = 0.0293KW
      →As the motor in use has a capacity of 90W, the belt conveyor travel unit is acceptable.
  • Selection of timing belt.
    • Motor 90W.
    • Number of teeth of timing pulley: 20T.
    • Design power 90W x 2.1 (load correction factor) = 189W.
    • Sprocket rotation speed: conveyor speed 37.4m/0.2 (sprocket) = 187rpm
      T10 reference electric power capacity: 132W.
    • Belt width: design power 90W x 2.1 = 189W.
    • Design power 189/reference electric power capacity 132 x reference belt width 10 = 14.3
      →Belt width 20mm is selected.

Other Design Consideration

  • To decrease the footprint of the mechanism for installation inside the conveyor system, an air cylinder is used to lift the mechanism.
  • Reduce weight by using aluminum material in the unit.
  • The synchronized speed of the two motors operating in parallel is controlled through an external speed setter or by an external DC voltage supply.
