IDEA NOTE Downsizing due to employment of 2-motor drive

As two motors share the weight of the conveyed object, it is possible to use smaller motors, limit the height of the device, and make the device structure suitable for installation between conveyors.

IDEA NOTE Conveyance of driving power via friction force

In order to convey driving power to the engineered plastic bearings that are usually used simply as roller guides, the friction force generated between the engineered plastic bearing and the pulley is used to directly drive the engineered plastic bearings.

Purpose

  • Purpose
    • Branches pallets being conveyed on the storage conveyor at a right angle. Or merges the pallet flowing from another conveyor at a right angle.
      It is possible to branch and merge on both sides of the storage conveyor feed direction.
  • Operation
    • 1. Branching: When a pallet arrives at the branching position, the drive roller mechanism ascends to lift the pallet from the conveyor, conveying the pallet to another conveyor. Then, the drive roller mechanism descends.

      2. Merging: When the pallet arrives at the merging position from another conveyor, the drive roller mechanism ascends and the drive roller operates to receive the pallet to be conveyed by the storage conveyor. Then, the drive roller mechanism descends to merge the pallet into the storage conveyor flow.

Selection Criteria for Main Components

  • To lift drive roller body (240N) + conveyed object (100N) + pallet (75N) = 415 (N), selected Ø63 air cylinder.
    To convey at a speed of 15m/min, selected a gear head with a gear ratio of 1 / 20.

Design Evaluation

Verification of main components

  • Whether the cylinder thrust, motor capacity, etc., are appropriate based on the load is verified.
  • Lift unit:
    • Conditional value: conveyor lift unit weight 240N, conveyed object weight 100N, pallet weight 75N, total weight 415N, and friction coefficient 0.2
    • Theoretical output of lift power of cylinder with lift guide when air pressure is 0.4MPa: 1250 x 0.7 (mechanical efficiency) = 875N ⇒ as it is 47% of lift output (= 415 / 875 x 100), this is acceptable.
  • Drive roller travel unit:
    • Conveyed object 100N + pallet 75N, total 175N/2 (2 motors) = 87.5N, speed = 15m/min, mechanical efficiency = 0.7
    • Capacity calculation: N = conveyed object [kg] x friction coefficient x speed [m/min] / (6120 x mechanical efficiency) 
      Therefore, N = (87.5/9.8) x 0.2 x 15 / (6120 x 0.7) = 0.0061kW
      ⇒ as motor in use has a capacity of 60W, this is acceptable.
  • Selection of roller chain:
    • Motor 60W, number of sprocket teeth 11T, number of sprocket rotations 75rpm, design power 60W x 1.3 (use factor) = compensated conveyance power 78W
      ⇒ As 0.37kW > 78W from the CHEM40 electric power table, there is no problem.

Other Design Consideration

  • To downsize the mechanism for the purpose of its installation inside the storage conveyor, an air cylinder is employed in the lift mechanism.
  • Reduced weight by using aluminum material in the lift unit.
  • Drives pallet by friction force generated between the drive pulley and the engineered plastic bearing.
  • Two motors are operated in parallel, and speed synchronization between them is enabled through setting by an external speed setter or by external DC voltage.
