Distance elements

Spacers, also known as spacer bolts or spacer rods, and distance pieces are components that serve to fix and precisely position fastening elements and components. They ensure that distances between components are maintained. Depending on the installation and application, distance elements are decisive for aesthetics, optimum use of installation space and the proper functioning of plant and machinery. They are made of aluminium, ceramic, plastic, brass, stainless steel, steel and titanium. The selected material and the treatment of the component are adapted to the intended use and the working environment. Spacers are often used in the automotive industry, in electrical and mechanical engineering, in medical technology and in measurement and sensor technology.

Spacers

Spacers are mainly made of hexagonal material in order to achieve easy assembly with a clamping tool, e.g. a wrench. Spacer bars are often also offered in square and cylindrical versions with a spanner flat.

A spacer is similar to a distance piece in many ways, but spacers have threads: male to female, female to female and male to male. These allow the spacer to be connected to a component to provide a lifting and separating function.

Spacers are used in plant construction in many industrial sectors, in measurement technology and in control cabinets. Depending on the application, they are made of aluminium, plastic, brass, steel, stainless steel or titanium.

Distance pieces

A distance piece – spacer sleeve, spacer tube – is almost always cylindrical and has no thread compared, unlike spacers. Primarily, distance pieces are used to lift components or separate components from each other. Secondarily, distance pieces are used to guide bolts, cables and screws.

Distance pieces are available in a variety of standard sizes. They can be made of different materials, adapted to the respective application. Common materials are aluminium, ceramic, plastic, nylon, stainless steel and steel.

Configuration options

There is no specific standardization for distance elements by the industry. They are adapted to the specific situation and working environment. The MISUMI product range includes a wide range of standard designs, as well as an extensive assortment of made-to-order products, which are individually manufactured according to customer requirements. Furthermore, our team is at your disposal for special designs and drawing parts.

In addition to a large selection of end forms, features, thread combinations and cross-sections, distance elements can be individually manufactured at MISUMI according to the customer's requirements. In doing so, the customer can configure the parameters diameter, length, material and surface treatment himself and thus adapt them individually to his application.

  • Various thread combinations: External-internal thread, internal-internal thread and external-outternal thread
  • Selectable materials: Aluminium, ceramic, plastic, brass, stainless steel, steel and titanium

Spacers & distance pieces in powertrain production

Distance elements are used in many industries. Spacers are used to ensure a stop, lifting or separating function. As they always have a thread, they can be connected directly to components. This enables the fixing and precise positioning of fasteners and components. In addition, spacers allow optimum use of installation space and ensure the proper functioning of fixtures and machines.

In drive train production, where precision is often required in the smallest of spaces, distance elements are a particularly cost-effective, reliable and low-maintenance component that is used in many fixtures. Spacers are generally made of solid material. They therefore enable precise positioning of fastening elements. In combination with the choice of material, spacers generally have no wear and thus a long service life – which ultimately depends on the application, of course. Spacers are mainly made of hexagonal material. This ensures easy assembly and disassembly with common clamping tools such as a wrench.

Application example IBK Herzog leakage jig

In the application shown here of a leakage jig in powertrain production, the spacers act as stops. They limit the stroke of the closing mechanism and thus ensure that the required distance is maintained when the leakage jig is closed.

Cable glands from LAPP

Cable glands from LAPP

Cable glands in a wide variety of variants are used everywhere in mechanical and plant engineering. With more than 20 manufacturers in the cable gland sector, Misumi offers one of the widest product ranges in the market. An important partner in the field of cable glands is Lapp Kabel, which offers a wide range of cable glands for all applications in addition to a world-leading cable range.

The SKINTOP cable gland portfolio ranges from plastic cable glands for control cabinets, measuring or test equipment with a large clamping range, various approvals, high IP protection class to brass glands for demanding applications in harsh environments or EMC applications. Stainless steel cable glands are particularly suitable for medical applications as well as the food industry, as they are ideal for thermal, chemical and mechanically demanding loads. A wide range of glands is also available for special applications such as explosion-proof areas. Many of Lapp's products are available directly from Misumi's warehouse.
