Turned parts - Precisely configurable Make-to-Order (MTO) components
Make-to-Order (MTO) turned parts and components are an important part of the modern manufacturing industry. Make-to-order means contract manufacturing. This means that production only begins when a specific order is available. In contrast to make-to-stock (MTS), where products are produced for stock, MTO components are only manufactured after order receipt.
What is Make-to-Order (MTO)?
In this manufacturing process, highly configurable special components are manufactured and made available globally as standard components (with product code). Whether in mechanical engineering, the packaging industry or also in medical technology - turned parts are required everywhere and must meet the highest quality standards.
In order to meet these standards, MISUMI relies on production by make-to-order (MTO). The product is produced immediately after being ordered by the customer.
The advantage of MTO is that a high degree of flexibility is guaranteed. Individual requirements of the customer can be taken into account and no unnecessary stock is created. In addition, the direct contact between the customer and manufacturer can lead to close cooperation in order to achieve an optimal result.
What are the benefits of Make To Order?
The make-to-order process is only produced if there is actually a need. This has the advantage of lower warehousing of finished products or components and thus also a reduction in the capital requirement for inventories. MISUMI is able to deliver MTO components within 4-12 days compared to other companies that usually require 1-3 months for delivery.
Make-to-order is particularly suitable for turned parts.
- To guarantee the highest precision and quality, each piece is individually manufactured and adapted for the customer.
- Efficient processes reduce the waiting time between ordering and delivery of the goods to a minimum for the customer.
This type of production also means that it is possible to react flexibly to changes in the market: If a particular product is no longer in demand as much as before or new trends are emerging in the market - no problem. You can reconsider and reorganise or plan your resources accordingly.
What are turned parts?
Turned parts are components that are manufactured by the process of turning. Processing by turning is a manufacturing process in which a workpiece is turned on a lathe while a cutting tool processes it to create the desired shape. This technique is often used to produce cylindrical or rotationally symmetrical parts.
- Mechanical engineering and special mechanical engineering: Turned parts are used in various machines and systems to perform certain functions or to establish a mechanical connection. Turned parts are used in machines for various components, such as screws, nuts, shafts, piston pins and valves.
- Electronics industry: In electronic devices, rotating parts for plug connectors, bushes, pin boards and other connecting elements are used.
- Medical technology: Turned parts are used for medical instruments and devices such as catheters, implants, screws and housings.
- Hydraulics and pneumatics: Turned parts are used in fluid and pressure transfer systems, for example hydraulic cylinders or valves.
How are turned parts manufactured?
Turning is a machining process in which a workpiece in a lathe is turned by a tool. It is used to bring workpieces to a specific shape and size.
Turned parts are manufactured in different sizes and shapes to meet the specific requirements of the sector in which they are used. There are many types of turned parts, including threaded bolts, bolts, nuts, screws, bosses, washers and many more.
Automotive industry and NAAMS turned parts
NAAMS (North American Automotive Metric Standards) is a combination of various companies and sets a number of specific standards. These standards are used in the automotive industry in North America to ensure a uniform procedure and quality assurance in the production of vehicles.
In contrast to the inch-based imperial system, the focus on the metric system facilitates the collaboration and exchange of parts and components with other standard metric standards and norms worldwide. Examples of this are DIN (German Institute for Standardisation) in Germany or JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) in Japan.
NAAMS covers various aspects of automotive manufacturing, including toolmaking, pressing tool components, punching tools, testing and measuring equipment, and manufacturing techniques.
By strictly adhering to these standards, process efficiency can be increased and product quality improved. This is particularly important as the automotive industry places high demands on safety and precision.
However, it is important to stress that NAAMS standards are specifically designed for automotive manufacturing in North America and are not necessarily applicable to other industries or regions outside North America. Each region and industry can have its own specific standards and norms that meet local needs and requirements.
MISUMI offers a wide range of NAAMS components and parts that strictly adhere to these specifications. This allows MISUMI to ensure that these products meet the requirements of vehicle manufacturers in North America and can be seamlessly integrated into the supply chain there.
