However, they are extremely useful for simple optical experiments from the perspective of them offering excellent affordability.

  · A birefringent element that applies phase contrast​to incidence light. Made by cutting a uniaxial quartz crystal along a plane that is parallel to the crystal axis.
  · It is structured from two quartz crystal plates adhered together with their crystal axes orthogonal to each other. This helps reduce the impact of phase contrast​due to changes in temperature.
  · Both the 1/4 wave plate and the 1/2 wave plate have narrow band anti-reflection film applied on both sides.
  · The birefringence amount of a crystal varies depending on the wavelength. Its phase contrast​also changes.
  · Therefore, to obtain a phase contrast​of λ/4 or λ/2 using wave plates, it is necessary to select according to the wavelength used. A prescribed retardation cannot be obtained in other wavelength ranges.

  · The birefringence of a wave plate varies depending on the wavelength of the light. Its phase contrast​also changes.
  · Therefore, there are some cases where the wavelength plate will not be effective in wavelengths other than the wavelength to be used.
  · An anti-reflection film for the wavelengths used has been applied on the front and the back surfaces of the wave plate.
  · Do not use in high temperature environments or with high energy lasers.
  · The phase contrast​may change due to changes in temperature.
