Technical Calculations

■Linear guide life calculations

●Life
When the linear system is in motion with applied load, the rolling surfaces and races are subject to repeated stress. This stress can cause scale-like flaking due to material fatigue. The total run distance until the flaking appears is the "Life" of the linear system.
●Rated Life
Rated life is a total distance 90% of linear guides reach without flaking when a group of the same guides are run under the same condition. The rated life can be calculated with basic dynamic load rating and the load applied on the guides as follows.
Load must be calculated before actually using linear guides. To obtain loads during linear reciprocating motion, it is necessary to consider vibrations and impacts during motion as well as the distribution load applied to the linear guides.The operating environment temperature also effects the life of these parts. When taking these conditions into consideration, the calculation will be:
  • L: Rated Life (Km)
  • fH: Hardness Factor (See Fig.1)
  • fT: Temperature Factor (See Fig.2)
  • fC: Contact Factor (See Table-1)
  • fW: Load Factor (See Table-2)
  • C: Basic Dynamic Load Rating (N)
  • P: Applied Load (N)
●Hardness factor (fH)

For linear applications, the rail and ball bearings must have sufficient hardness. If they do not, the load rating decreases and the life will be reduced.

●Temperature factor (fT)

When the temperature of the linear system exceeds 100 degrees C, the hardness will decrease and as a result, the allowable load and life will be reduced.

●Contact factor (fC)

In general, it is common to use two or more blocks on one rail. In these cases, the load on each block will vary depending on the machining precision and will not have equally distributed loads. As a result, the allowable load per block will vary depending on the number of blocks used on the rail.

To calculate the load applied to the linear guides, in addition to the object weight, the inertia force attributed to the motion velocity, moment loads and the variations of each over time must be obtained. However, for reciprocating motion applications, it is difficult to obtain accurate calculations due to effects of the vibrations and shocks. therefor, use Table 2 to simplify the life calculations.

When moment loads apply a block, use the following formula to convert the moment load to applicable load.

IDEA NOTE The linear block is fixed and rail is in motion.

For the movement of the block, a rail needs to be installed in the block's movement range. The rail cannot be installed due to the restriction imposed by the workpiece on the transfer table. (The height of the device is limited to 380 mm or less, making it impossible to avoid interference using the vertical space.) To counter this restriction, the block is fixed and the rail moves.

  • It has to be verified whether the linear guides withstand the loading moment and whether the robot is suitable for the transfer specifications (load capacity, speed, stroke).
  • Linear guide allowable moment
    • Linear guide allowable moment: MB = 104 N・m (yawing)
    • Single axis robot maximum push force: f = 150 N
      Distance from rotation center to acting point: l = 0.136 m
      Safety factor: e = 5 times
      Loading moment: M = 150 N x 0.136 = 20.4
      Required allowable moment: MB > M x e = 20.4 x 5 = 102 N・m
      Therefore, linear guides with allowable moment of 104 N・m are selected.
  • Transfer mass: 2.25 kg
    • Linear guide rail: 0.92 kg, slide plate: 0.58 kg, pan: 0.32 kg, claw holder: 0.37 kg, claw: 0.06 kg
  • Workpiece mass: 0.17 kg x 3 pieces = 0.51 kg
    • Friction coefficient: 0.3 (tentative value)
    • Required operation power: workpiece mass x friction coefficient = 0.51 kg x 0.3 = 0.153 kg

    • 2.25 kg + 0.153 kg = 2.403 kg < 25 kg (single axis robot maximum load capacity)
  • Required speed
    • 1 cycle: 3 s
      Required speed = (transfer distance x 2) / 3 = 458 mm / 3 s = 153 mm/s
      As acceleration/deceleration time is not considered in this equation,
      Acceleration: 0.1 G = 980 mm/s² (tentative value)
      Setting speed: 350 mm/s < 500 mm/s (single axis robot maximum speed)
      Acceleration time = speed / acceleration = 350 mm/s / 980 mm/s² = 0.33 s
      Moving distance during acceleration/deceleration = acceleration x acceleration time / 2 = 980 mm/s² x 0.33 s / 2 = 53.4 mm
      Moving distance at setting speed = distance per cycle - moving distance per cycle during acceleration/deceleration = 229 mm x 2 - 53.4 mm x 4 = 244.4 mm
      Moving time at setting speed = moving distance at setting speed / setting speed = 244.4 mm / 350 mm/s = 0.77 s
    • 1 cycle = 0.77 s + 0.33 s x 4 = 2.09 s
    • Marginal time: 3 s - 2.09 s = 0.91 s

Other Design Consideration

  • Since the linear guide is mounted directly above the workpiece transfer table, a drip pan is installed to catch excess grease.
